Ephesians 4:17-26
Paul challenges the church in Ephesus to see life differently. They are to look to Jesus for renewal of life and perspective. He calls them not to walk as the Gentiles do. The way of the Gentiles is the way of the world. Paul taught those in Ephesus the way of Christ; they were not taught the way of the world by Him. This newness is found in Christ.
One of the ways of the world is how we treat one another. Verses 25-26 highlight this. Paul quotes Zechariah, “Speak truth each one of you with his neighbor.” When we are not to be deceptive, we are not called to go behind each other’s backs. This truth is to be spoken in love, not hate, anger, or opinion. This is the distinguishing mark of the one who follows Christ.
Paul acknowledges anger, but questions if the anger is justified. Is it okay to be angry over an opinion or something someone does that conflicts with your sensibilities? If a fellow Christian treats you with contempt and follows worldly ways, then it is acceptable to be angry about their actions. This is why we need to speak the truth in love to one another and not let anger grow unchecked. It's okay to feel anger, but it's not okay to remain in that state.
Psalm 4
The Lord hears our prayer; it is He to whom I call in times of distress. The Lord sets apart the godly person, not those who follow the ways of the world. The Lord hears me when I call.
I am called to be angry about unrighteousness, but I am also called to meditate in my heart, on my bed, and be still.
Verse five states that my sacrifice should be righteousness. I am called to do good, seek His way, obey His commands, and be set apart for Him in everything I do. I must put away sins from my life. This is how you trust in the Lord! Selah!
Joy comes from the Lord, and peace comes from the Lord. I will rest in His comfort.
